Sidney Lumet dies

Goodbye to the director of Dog Day Afternoon

by Jennie Kermode

Sidney Lumet, the iconic director of Dog Day Afternoon, 12 Angry Men and Serpico, has passed away at the age of 86. Remarkably prolific, he made his last film just four years ago and also worked as a writer, actor and producer. He received an honorary Oscar in 2005.

Celebrated as a great director of actors, Lumet coaxed career best performances out of the likes of Al Pacino and River Phoenix. He was well known for his concern with poverty, justice and political corruption, as well as for his love of New York City. Besides cinema, he made significant contributions to television and to his first love, the theatre.

Lumet died at his home in New York after a protracted struggle with lymphoma.
