Lion King 3D to premiere in Edinburgh

New version of Disney favourite will close the festival.

by Jennie Kermode

Disney fans have a treat to look forward to in Edinburgh this month - if they can get tickets, that is! The Edinburgh International Film Festival have just announced that the 3D version of The Lion King will be their closing film, screening in the Festival Theatre on June 25.

The festival has enjoyed a close relationship with Disney in recent years, also hosting the UK premieres of films like WALL-E and Toy Story 3. Today's announcement is being seen as something of a coup and a show of strength from an event whose reception so far has been somewhat underwhelming. It has been hinted that further surprise announcements may be made during the next few days.

The Lion King 3D will be released in cinemas across the UK in October, and on DVD and 3D Blu-ray later in the year.
