Nicolas Roeg honoured

London Critics' Film Circle celebrates Don't Look Now director

by Jennie Kermode

Distinctive British film maker Nicolas Roeg is to be honoured with the Dilys Powell Award for Excellence in Film in recognition of his lifetime contribution to the industry. Roeg, whose films include Don't Look Now, The Man Who Fell To Earth and Walkabout, is one of few directors to achieve both critical acclaim and lasting cult appeal. From the controversial Performance to gleeful Roald Dahl adaptation The Witches, he has infuriated, perplexed and delighted audiences in equal measure.

"This award has truly amazed me and certainly caught me a bit leftfooted," said Roeg, adding that he is now willing to look on the positive side of a community that has given him mixed reviews in the past. The award has previously been presented to Judi Dench, Richard Attenborough and Dirk Bogarde. Roeg will receive his gong on the 19th of January in a ceremony at London Southbank.
