The Oscars 2012

The Artist and Hugo are the big winners.

by Jennie Kermode

It's been a fantastic night for Hollywood glamour at the Oscars, with The Artist taking Best Film as well as Best Director for Michel Hazanavicius and Best Actor for Jean Dujardin. Nominated 17 times and with only two wins before, Meryl Streep finally took the Best Actress prize for her turn as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, while Octavia Spencer won Best Supporting Actress for The Help, giving a genuinely emotional speech and being all the more excited because she got to receive her award from a particularly dashing Christian Bale. Best Supporting Actor went to Christopher Plummer, the oldest actor ever to win an Oscar, for Beginners.

There were some fabulous dresses on display and everybody in good humour. Jessica Chastain, Glenn Close, Meryl Streep and Tina Fey were the darlings of the fashion crowd, and Kermit and Miss Piggy also graced the red carpet despite earlier threats of a boycott, perhaps because fellow four-footer Uggie was allowed to attend with The Artist team, even appearing on stage at the end of the night.

In a very well choreographed show, not everything went exactly as the organiswers had planned it. Sacha Baron-Cohen arrived in character as The Dictator, throwing what he alleged were the ashes of Kim Jong Il all over Ryan Seacrest.
