Smurf and Ged take Palm Dog

British canines win Cannes prize.

by Jennie Kermode

They're the stars of dark British comedy Sightseers, and now they're international stars. Terriers Smurf and Ged are sharing the 12th annual Palm Dog award in a year when the canine competition has been tougher than ever.

The story of a young couple who go on a caravanning holiday by mistake, Sightseers is not the kind of film that usually takes big prizes - and although it may be unofficial, the Palm Dog now commands a lot of attention. Up against the film were big hitters like Moonrise Kingdom and The Hunt, both of which place their canine stars in perilous and heatrending situations, so the two terriers have done well to make such an impression. Runner up was Billy Bob, who stars alongside an ageing punk in Le Grand Soir.

Last year's Palm Dog went to The Artist star Uggie, who has since retired.
