The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced yesterday, June 22, that Richard Serra has designed the poster for the 55th New York Film Festival. The festival will open on September 28 with the World Premiere of Richard Linklater's Last Flag Flying, starring Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne.

Recent New York Film Festival posters were designed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul (2016) and Laurie Anderson (2015).

“Richard Serra’s work has never stopped growing in my mind and memory,” said New York Film Festival Director of Programming and Selection Committee Chair Kent Jones. “During every one of my many visits to MoMA’s 2007 retrospective and to the permanent installations in Dia:Beacon, alone or with loved ones, I could feel everyone’s sense of the possible opening a couple of clicks wider. I was excited that he agreed to design this year’s NYFF poster, but when I saw the design I was taken aback - so wondrously elemental, and in such absolute harmony with the art of cinema.”

Richard Serra says his design for this year’s poster effectively reflects and references the camera eye, explaining, “The image I selected for the poster is the interior of an 80’ tower sculpture in Qatar which functions as an aperture and seemed to me to make sense.”

The complete list of New York Film Festival poster artists since 1963: Larry Rivers, Saul Bass, Bruce Conner, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Henry Pearson, Marisol (Escobar), James Rosenquist, Frank Stella, Josef Albers, Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely, Carol Summers, Allan D’Arcangelo, Jim Dine, Richard Avedon, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Les Levine, David Hockney, Robert Rauschenberg, Jack Youngerman, Robert Breer, Tom Wesselmann, Elinor Bunin, Sol Lewitt, Milton Glaser, Jennifer Bartlett, Eric Fischl, Philip Pearlstein, William Wegman, Sheila Metzner, William Copley, Diane Arbus, Juan Gatti, Larry Rivers, Martin Scorsese, Ivan Chermayeff, Tamar Hirschl, Manny Farber, Julian Schnabel, Junichi Taki, Jeff Bridges, Maurice Pialat, Mary Ellen Mark, agnès b., Robert Cottingham, Gregory Crewdson, John Baldessari, Lorna Simpson, Cindy Sherman, Tacita Dean, Laurie Simmons, Laurie Anderson, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, and Richard Serra.
