As IberoDocs kicks off in Edinburgh tomorrow night it is putting its focus on female filmmaking, with 80 per cent of the programme directed by women.

The fifth edition of the festival will screen 24 films between April 4 and 8 at venues in the city before a selection of the films head to Glasgow on May 4 and 5. The programme features 21 Scottish premieres.

Festival director Mar Felices said: “This year’s edition marks the 5th anniversary of perseverance and we could not be any more proud.

“The Festival has always acted as a bridge between continents and in five years it has overcome all sorts of barriers in order to deliver a high-quality and innovative artistic programme”.

This year the festival is expanding beyond its traditional Edinburgh Filmhouse venue, with additional screenings at Adam’s House, Out of the Blue, Edinburgh College of Art and Grassmarket Community Centre.

The festival opens with Maria Converses (Maria Conversa), which follows actress Blanca Portillo as she prepares to play the lead character in Mary’s Testament by Colm Tóibín. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director Lydia Zimmerman, producer Javier Pérez Santana and distributor Johanna Tonini. Other directors attending the festival include Susana Guardiola (Voices From Mozambique), Olivia Crellin (Sununú: The Revolution Of Love) and Chico Pereira (Pablo's Winter, Donkeyote).

Additional events will include a family day, workshops and live music.
