The Glasgow Youth Film Festival has announced that it's 10th anniversary edition will open with high school zombie musical Anna And The Apocalypse.

The festival - which is programmed by young programmers, aged 15 to 19, who are mentored year round - runs from September 14 to 16.

Anna And The Apocalypse director John McPhail said: “I’m so pleased that the Glasgow Youth Film Festival team have chosen to programme Anna and the Apocalypse - it really means a lot to me. I’m a Glasgow boy, and remember sitting in GFT watching all these amazing films, inspired to make my own - I hope young aspiring filmmakers watch this and know it is possible to make any film, even horror zombie musicals if they want!”

The programmers are currently participating in GYFF Summer School to put together the festival. The programme includes a master-class on film criticism with The Skinny magazine’s film editor Jamie Dunn; alongside workshops on programming, marketing, short film and pop-up cinema programming.

The Scottish Government Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs Fiona Hyslop, said: “GYFF is one of the most innovative film festivals in Scotland and beyond. With its outstanding range of international films and creative workshops specifically tailored for a younger audience, it offers a unique chance for young people to learn directly from world-renowned industry experts and gain hands-on experience to develop their passions and make their CVs stand out.

“Film is a great way for different voices across Scotland, including young people, to tell their stories in new and innovative ways. Especially as we celebrate Scotland’s Year of Young People 2018, I am pleased to see the incredible work Glasgow Youth Film Festival is doing to inspire a love of film in our younger audiences and aspiring filmmakers, creating new opportunities for their skills and talents to flourish.”

The full programme will be announced on August 15, with tickets for the opening film going on sale on August 1.
