A Colombian film-maker has been named president of the jury for the Cannes Critics’ Week running from 15 to 23 May within the Cannes Film Festival.

Ciro Guerra and his colleagues will bestow the Grand Prix Nespresso in the Semaine de la Critique, making their selection from four shorts and four features.

The director and screenwriter is known for Embrace Of The Serpent in 2015 and more recently for Birds Of Passage which last year opened the Directors’ Fortnight section of the Festival and was co-directed with his partner Cristina Gallego.

He made his first film Wandering Shadows in 2004 at the age of 23. The film was selected as the Colombian submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 78th Academy Awards.

Currently he is on post production for his fifth feature film Waiting For The Barbarians (based on the novel by Nobel prize-winning author JM Coetzee) with Johnny Depp, Mark Rylance and Robert Pattinson. The theme is imperialism and tyranny and centres on an imaginary empire, racial strife and power struggles in a fictional colonial village and marks Guerra’s English-language début.

Helping him to make the winning selection for the 58th edition of the Week will be Franco-British actress Amira Casar, producer Marianne Slot, Congolese critic Dija Mambu and Italian director Jonas Carpignano.

Titles for the Critics’ Week will be unveiled on 22 April.
