The line-up for the inaugural Taiwan Film Festival Edinburgh, which will take place from 18 to 27 September, was announced today. Including films made from 1960 to the present, it aims to explore the cultural, societal and political changes that have taken place on the island. It features strands on trans-regional cinema, melodrama, documentary, New Taiwanese cinema and Hokkien-language cinema, plus a collection of shorts and a focus on the work of the internationally acclaimed Midi Z.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the festival will be held online. All films will be free to watch and there will also be special events including panel discussions and opportunities to hear from the filmmakers.

"“We are extremely excited to be able to share this first ever Taiwan Film Festival Edinburgh with UK audiences," said chief curator Liu Kuan-ping. "It has been great to witness the global surge in interest in Taiwanese cinematography over the last decade and we hope this Festival helps introduce some of the lesser-known talent to wider audiences as it charts the fascinating journey of Taiwanese cinema from the Sixties until now."
