EIFF 2002: Day 12

Closing film and closing party. Christopher Nolan shares our Insomnia.

Le Fin

Well, it's over, and it went with a big bang! The last couple of weeks have felt more like months. Great movies and great guests have come and gone from this fair city, yet I'm still here.

The day was supposed to begin with director Christopher (Memento) Nolan giving a press conference, but unfortunately was cancelled. He did appear at his Reel Life event though earlier at the Festival favourite, the UGC where his film Insomnia also premiered this evening. Across town at the Odeon, the Film Festival awards were taking place with Rabbit Proof Fence being the talk of the night.

The rather elegant ex-Eastender Tamsin Outhwaite added a rather modest touch of glamour to the affair. Straight after the gongs was another screening of Insomnia, after which festival buses took us off to the closing night party held again at the Corn Exchange.

We were parched on arrival, but that was fine as we were fed and watered within minutes. Bizarrely coloured cocktails, fine wines and bountiful beers certainly kept me going for a while. The food was a little strange though, following that new fad for everything in miniature, and cottage pies are very odd to say the least in small form. The desserts however were fabulous, well how can a vodka Red Bull jelly not be!

The best part was the band, though. My good friend Chris and his wife Becks had us on the dance floor for some jazzy old time dancin'.

As for star-spotting, there were some faces from Braveheart lurking around, but more importantly, the ubiquitous Tamsin Outhwaite graced us with her presence, yet again. Later, after perhaps a few too many of those cocktails she bravely got up on the stage with the DJ to dance her little socks off, much to the amusement of us less daring onlookers.

Needless to say, I went home singing on the bus and quite tired and emotional, again.

Insomnia is something I have definitely become quite familiar with in the past two weeks. I'm retiring now, extremely prematurely, and if you want to find me, I'll be in The Priory.

Adieu,

Weegeet xxx
