The 8th Annual Tribeca Film Festival announced the first part of its slate today, including the Narrative and Documentary Competition strands.

The festival will include 86 feature-length and 46 short films. In addition to the 24 competition films announced today, the 14 films making up the Discovery section, which showcases new and emerging voices, were also revealed.

Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal said: "Each year we look forward to bringing our films to the most engaged movie-going audience and providing filmmakers a global stage.

"Film festivals play a critical role in the life of a film. Tribeca is here to support these films and filmmakers along their journey. We are very proud of the slate this year and hope everyone will come and enjoy the Festival."

TFF 2009 will kick off its 12-day run on April 22 with Woody Allen's Whatever Works.

This year's films were chosen from a total of 2,254 feature submissions and come from 34 countries.

Among the British productions and co-productions screening, are Biedie Finzi's documentary about ballet dancers from the favelas of Brazil, Only When I Dance, and part competition-movie, part cultural examination, Team Qatar, directed by Liz Mermin.

Also competing from this side of the Atlantic is award-winning writer Conor McPherson's Irish drama The Eclipse, showing in the World Narrative Section.

British romantic comedy My Last Five Girlfriends, directed by Julian Kemp, will also feature in the Discovery line-up.

Read about all the films in the strands announced so far here “I’m really excited about the fantastic mix of talent we have this year. There are many impressive debut directors and astounding performances by up-and-coming actors whom I believe have strong futures ahead of them,” said David Kwok, Director of Programming. “When considering these films alongside the remarkable new work being presented by established talent, I think viewers will be pleased by what they find in our competition and discovery sections."
