Farrah Fawcett dies aged 62

Charlie's angel passes on.

by Scott Macdonald

Swimsuit goddess Farrah Fawcett has died following a three year battle with anal cancer. She passed away today, June 25th 2009, at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California. She was 62.

The recipient of multiple Golden Globe and Emmy nominations, Fawcett shot to fame as Jill Monroe in the first season of Charlie's Angels. She left the show after one season but, due to contractual obligations, returned for several episodes in later seasons. Her Monroe hairstyle proved enormously popular in the Eighties - with her one-piece red bathing suit pin-up poster providing her with far more money in royalties than she was ever paid on the show.

After several flops, Fawcett won critical acclaim in 1983 for the off-Broadway production of Extremities - a controversial play by William Mastrosimone, where she plays a potential rape victim who overpowers her attacker. Even more acclaim followed in 1984, where she played a battered wife in the highest rated TV-movie of the season, The Burning Bed. She also appeared in several popular films, including [film id=22146]Logan's Run[/film] and The Cannonball Run.

Fawcett died peacefully in the company of her partner, actor Ryan O'Neal. She is survived by her son, Redmond, 24, who is currently serving a drug-offence jail term.
