Weimarvellous events to run at this year's GFF

Events include a rare screening of The Blue Angel

With the Glasgow Film Festival now only a little over a week away, it has been announced that a series of events celebrating the best of Weimar cinema will take place over the first weekend of the festival.

Programmed by a team from the University of Edinburgh, in association with Cinema Spectacular, Weimarevllous will feature a mix of screenings, live events and experimentations in film exhibition and aims to bring a little bit of pre-war Berlin to Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts.

The celebration begins on Friday with a champagne reception and screening of The Blue Angel (1930), starring the iconic Marlene Dietrich. The film is followed by a night of cabaret and burlesque, culminating with a particularly Weimarvellous take on jazz-inspired sing-alongs in the form of ‘Cabaroke’.

On Saturday there will be two screenings to celebrate this union of Berlin and Germany, with two cinematic homages to the cities. First is a screening of the seminal Berlin: Symphony Of A Great City (1927) and this will be followed with a specially commissioned tribute to the ‘Dear Green Place’ with Glasgow: Symphony Of A Great City (2012).

The weekend of events will conclude with a screening of the mesmerising animation The Adventures Of Prince Achmed (1926), by the avant garde animator Lotte Reiniger.
