Magical Girl |
It was a good night for Spanish film in general - which seems to be thriving rather than failing in the face of recession. Alberto Rodriguez’s Marshland (Isla Minima), a crime thriller which charts a serial killer hunt against the backdrop of the changing face of Spanish society after the fall of Franco, picked up the best actor for Javier Gutiérrez and saw Alex Catalan take home the prize for cinematography.
Vermut's twisty, blackly comic drama skewers the state of modern Spain - and the echoes of its past - as it tells the tale of desperate measures being taken by a father to please his sick daughter, which lead to extreme actions elsewhere.
The special jury prize went to Cedric Kahn for his Wild Life - a drama based on the true story of a man who went on the run with his children in France after losing a custody battle.
Dennis Lehane won the best screenplay award for his adaptation of his own novel - starring Tom Hardy as a Brooklyn barkeeper - The Drop, directed by Bullhead's Michael E Roskam.
Paprika Steen's portrayal of a highly strung ice queen in Bille August's Silent Heart, saw her named best actress.
Mexican director Alonso Ruiz Palacios won the Horizontes prize as well as the youth award for his part road-trip, part coming-of-age comedy Gueros.
Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov took home the New Directors' Award for The Lesson (Urok), while the audience prize went to Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado’s documentary The Salt Of The Earth.
Christian Petzold's German drama about the traumatic aftermath of war, Phoenix, won the Fipresci international critics prize.
