One of the most hotly anticipated talents at this year’s 41st Deauville American Film Festival, Twilight star Robert Pattinson pulled out of his Normandy date at the last minute and failed to appear to pick up his New Hollywood award last night (September 6).

The reason given for his absence was that he had been detained in Belfast on the shoot of a new film The Lost City Of Z, written and directed by James Gray. He was due to appear alongside director Anton Corbijn and fellow actor Dane DeHaan. Pattinson and Dehaan team up as photographer Dennis Stock and cultural icon James Dean in Life, a biopic that explores the time the pair spent together during a road trip from California to Indiana prior to Dean’s breakthrough as an actor.

The Lost City Of Z is an adaptation of the David Grann book about legendary British explorer Percy Fawcett, who disappeared in the 1920s while searching for an ancient lost city in the Amazon rainforest. Pattinson has grown a bushy beard for the role.

The movie is due for release next year. Besides Pattinson, the film also features Charlie Hunnam (best known for his role as Jax in the TV show The Sons Of Anarchy) and Sienna Miller.

The other recipient of the New Hollywood award, actress Elizabeth Olsen, is scheduled to appear to pick up her honour on Wednesday.
