The Tribeca Film Festival has announced it is to open its 20th edition with Lin-Maneul Miranda's In The Heights, directed by Jon M Chu.

In The Heights is a feature adaptation of the Broadway musical, set in New York's uptown district of Washington Heights and was originally slated to be released last year. It centres on a Bodega owner who has mixed feelings about retiring after inheriting a fortune and has had a very favourable social media reaction from those who have seen it.

Miranda said: "it is such an honour to open the 20th anniversary Tribeca Festival with In the Heights. We’re so excited to welcome them uptown. This will be an unforgettable night at the United Palace. We can’t wait to share this musical love letter to our community, with our community, in our community."

Last month, the festival announced it would host live events and outdoor screenings this summer across 12 days, from June 9 to 20, after it had to cancel the 2020 edition last spring due to the pandemic. Venues will include Empire Outlets (Staten Island) and The MetroTech Commons (Brooklyn), as well as Brookfield Place New York, Pier 57 Rooftop, The Battery, Hudson Yards (Manhattan).
