The line-up of the 79th Venice Film Festival, which runs from August 31 to September 10, has been announced.

The competition titles include directorial heavyhitters Joanna Hogg, Martin McDonagh, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, Darren Aronofsky and Andrew Dominik. Other notable names in competition are Luca Guadagnino, Jafar Panahi and Florian Zeller.

Hogg brings Wales-set The Eternal Daughter, which stars Tilda Swinton, while McDonagh brings The Banshees Of Inisherin, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. Iñárritu's Bardo, False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths tells the tale of a journalist in an existential crisis, while Aronofsky, whose Black Swan opened the festival in 2010, brings The Whale, about an obese recluse, played by Brendan Fraser. Zeller will premiere The Son, his follow-up to Oscar-winning The Father, Dominik brings his Netflix original Marilyn Monroe drama Blonde and Guadagnino brings Bones And All, about cannibals on a road trip, starring Call Me By Your Name's Timothée Chalamet. The festival will also screen No Bears by Panahi, who was recently jailed in Iran amid international protest.

The festival will open with White Noise, as previously announced, and its competition jury will be headed by Julianne Moore and feature Audrey Diwan, Leonardo Di Costanzo, Mariano Cohn, Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Leila Hatami and Kazuo Ishiguro.
