Quentin Dupieux's Smoking Causes Coughing is to headline the Frightfest selection at this year's Glasgow Film Festival, it was revealed today. This latest work from the director of Mandibles and Incredible But True follows superheroes the Tobacco Force as they fight evildoers by using cigarettes to endanger their health, but run into trouble due to internal strife and are forced to resort to spending time at a team-building retreat if they are to have a hope of defeating their latest foe.

It's a quirky introduction to a line-up which goes to extremes with intense thriller Hunt Her, Kill Her and gory World War Two actioner Sisu. There's also a chance to see childhood friends as never before in Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey.

"FrightFest is one of the most potent forces on the horror, science fiction and extreme thriller landscape, a reputation that has firmly placed it in the Top 10 Essential Fantasy Festivals List. And we aim to stay ahead of the chiller curve, returning to the incomparable Glasgow Film Festival with a shiver and shudder showcase of epic proportions," said festival co-director Alan Jones.

Glasgow Frightfest is generally considered by fans to come closer than any other event to capturing the spirit of the iconic horror festival's early days, with a relatively small crowd, an experimental approach and lots of opportunities to talk to the filmmakers themselves. This year's event runs at the Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) from 9 to 11 March.
