Mirren, Ullmann and Jarmusch in Cannes Classics

Godard tribute to include his final film as Thelma & Louise ride again

One of the last sections to be revealed for the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival - the Cannes Classics - will include appearances from Liv Ullmann, Jim Jarmusch, Carole Bouquet, and Helen Mirren as well as special focus on the late Jean-Luc Godard including a world premiere of his last work Phony Wars.

Ullmann talks about her career as an actor and director as well as her activism in a new documentary Liv Ullmann - A Road Less Travelled, director Dheeraj Akolkar who will also be present for the screening.

Jim Jarmusch and Carter Logan (both founder members of the group Sqürl) have composed the soundtrack to a restored version of Return to Reason, Man Ray’s experimental first film made in 1923.

Carole Bouquet is one of the many contributors to a documentary about film-making dynasty of Paul Rassam and Claude Berri who have backed such hits as The Big Feast, So Long, Stooge, Welcome To The Sticks, and The Artist.

Helen Mirren will in an appearance for a new cut of cult classic Caligula - the Ultimate Cut, directed by Tinto Brass and hailed by director Nicholas Winding Refn as “the very quintessence of bad taste, in all the very best ways.” The cast also included Malcolm McDowell and Peter O’Toole - and it was adapted from an original screenplay by Gore Vidal.

The Godard focus will offer restorations of Contempt (Le Mépris) and the archival self-portrait Godard by Godard in addition to the premiere of Phoney Wars.

A collection of filmmakers talk about the future in Room 999, among them James Gray, Rebecca Zlotowski, Claire Denis, Olivier Assayas, Nadav Lapid, Asghar Farhadi, and Alice Rohrwacher. It picks up where Wim Wenders left off in 1982 when he asked 16 of his fellow directors to reflect on the future of cinema. The new take has been directed by Lubna Playoust.

Revered Japanese director Ozu who died in 1963, will be celebrated in new copies of Record Of A Tenement Gentleman from 1947 and The Munekata which he directed in 1950.

Another noteworthy restoration (presented by Park Circus) of Thelma And Louise has been supervised by director Ridley Scott and preludes its release in the UK from 2 June; France on 5 July and the US on 4 August. The rocking road trip by Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis will show under the stars as part of the Cinéma de la Plage beach screenings. Others include Emir Kusturica’s Underground, Jean Becker’s One Deadly Summer, and as a tribute to Jean-Pierre Bacri a new copy of C’est la vie! by Éric Toledano and Olivier Nakache.

The Cannes Film Festival runs from 16 to 27 May.
