Edinburgh Film Festival returned for its 77th edition and its first under the direction of Paul Ridd. It opened with The Outrun on August 15 and closed with Since Yesterday: The Story of Scotland's Girl Bands on August 21. This year also saw the inauguration of the Sean Connery Prize, with a £50,000 purse - it was won by The Ceremony, directed by Jack King. Gaspar Noé and Thelma Schoonmaker took part in conversation events.
